Kells Is Proof That Anyone With A Pulse Can Succeed

I graduated from the academy this past Monday. 16 weeks of the most intense portion of my life is now over. I'm more than appreciative to go through the training we endured at the academy. The things I've learned at the academy will carry on with me for the rest of my life. All the hard work was finally celebrated with fellow Officers, friends, and family. I've never been more thrilled about anything in my life. The bagpipes, the speeches, the loyalty between all the officers from different agencies, and even family members crying out of joy was really a sight to be seen.

Now that graduation is over it's time to start this honorable career. Before cutting me loose to the streets I alongside the other new recruits had to go through "in house orientation." For the pass several days we've been introduced to all the technology the department has to offer, the detective's division, the lock-up, and so much more. At times I've had to turn my head when commanding officers are talking because I'm overwhelmed with excitement. The last thing I want is one of my commanding officers to look me in the face and ask "Officer why in the hell are you smiling so much."

Today was my 1st day in Patrol. Instead of working directly with my Field Training Officer (FTO), our Commander took us in a 3 patrol unit with 9 Officers across the city where we did tons of fun stuff. Working with the public is going to take some getting use to. For the most part I have to realize my age is going to play a major factor in the response I get from most people I come in contact with. Several citizens, especially females inquired about my age on several occasions. I did my best to maintain professionalism, and get the job done.

After going on patrol, the Command staff called several Officers in the administration office. We were given the order to report to the station Monday in plain clothes, and not to shave or cut our hair until further notice. Wow after 16 weeks, I was really getting used to having a clean shaven face - now it's time to grow the beard out and conceal the fact that I'm an officer. From what I was told, my Command staff wants to take advantage of my "young look." The operation we're going to be working sounds extremely dangerous, but as equally exciting. I really wish I could speak on the details of the operation, but not only would that be against department policy but would also further jeopardize the safety of my partners as well as myself.

I wake up every morning feeling like it's Xmas all over again. I put on my uniform with pride and I hold my head high while doing my job. Today another Officer walked up to me and said "I don't know about you, but I would work 16 hours straight if they requested. Not because I have nothing more to do, but because I love this job." After listening to that Officer speak, I couldn't agree more. There aren't many people who can say the same about their career. I'm blessed to be one of the few that can.

Final Thought: I'll probably never talk directly about anything that goes on while on patrol or working in any other unit in my department. However I will touch on my general experiences as a young Officer working the beat. Stay tune, it's going to be a hot summer.
